Alphabet PWA

A game for learning the Korean alphabet, Hangul, for the first time. I built it for Ottiya as a progressive web app, as lead developer in a team of five.

The brief

  • Fourteen consonants, each written seven times
  • Five tests that match a consonant with its sound
  • Dr. Coli, a broccoli, shows how each one is written
  • Points, levels and coins, with a shop to dress the mascot

Learning a letter

From the start screen to a list of challenges, one per consonant. Before a letter is written, Dr. Coli shows the stroke.

Tested with children

children tried the first prototype at a primary school
16
rounds of usability testing
2
repetitions per letter, settled by testing

Practice and reward

Each consonant is written seven times. The first prototype asked for more and the children got bored; five turned out too few to remember the letters. A finished letter earns points and coins, and the coins buy the mascot a new outfit, which is where the children spent most of their time in the test.
